After a decade of cuts, Vancouver’s school board has no fat left to trim: Chair

As the Vancouver School Board (VSB) prepares for a predicted $24.3-million funding shortfall come spring, chair Patti Bacchus says there’s simply no fat left to trim. The shortfall was recently increased from $20.8 million due to recently announced increases to teacher’s pension plan contributions. “We’re now cutting into the bone,” said Bacchus, who added that the VSB has already cut librarian hours, made cuts to ESL and special needs programs and even turned down the heat in schools. “Frankly to take things down much more it really concerns me.” Bacchus said that although the board is hopeful they will get more provincial funding, they are still preparing to make further cuts.
